The Lima Kiwanis Club's "Diva Den" is set for this Saturday. It's a collection of new or gently used formal wear that the girls can try on to find just the right dress for that special evening. There is no cost for the dresses and organizers say it's well worth their efforts.
Santa Claus was the grand finale of the Children’s Hometown Holiday parade that also brought nearly 75 different characters to the downtown area, like the Pillsbury Dough Boy and Baby Shark, along with musicians, pageant royalty, and dancers. After the parade, kids could get a present from Santa, go ice skating or for a pony ride, and try their luck at bumper cars and everything was free. Organizers were expecting around 3000 people at the event. Elaine Poppe started the Children's Hometown Holiday because she wanted to make sure that all kids had a great holiday memory and every year she hears from parents who want to give their own kids that same experience.
It was the Lima Allen County Chamber of Commerce's 10th annual "Jollification" luncheon. It's part of the "Women in Business" program to give these busy ladies an opportunity to network and share stories of their experiences. Today they got to shop, sign up for raffles and even act a little goofy in the spirit of "Jollification".
It was the annual auxiliary craft show. Hundreds of volunteers have been working year-round to make the crafts filling the tables. There were also homemade candy and baked goods along with raffle baskets. The proceeds from the sale go towards the million-dollar pledge the auxiliary made to the graduate medical education center. Organizers say it was wonderful to see everyone out supporting them as it was the first street fair since the pandemic.
The Freedom Flag Monument Foundation holding their Veterans Day observance at 11:11 this morning in remembrance of the signing of the armistice. This was the 12th year for the observance at the monument and organizers say it's important to remember.
Downtown Lima Inc. is hosting a new event called "Lights on Lima" to be held on Friday, November 25th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Lima's town square. Plans are still in the making but those involved say it will be a family-friendly event to ring in the holidays with a variety of activities. Organizers say the lighting of the downtown Christmas tree is an event that people look forward to each year and they wanted to keep that tradition.
This is the 30th year the chamber has held ChamberFest, their largest event of the year. Hundreds came to the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center downtown to take part in the festivities. From Plinko to Texas Hold'em, there was plenty for attendees to do. Local restaurants were also invited to showcase their menus. Organizers are glad to be able to bring a taste of Vegas to chamber members every year.
Organizers say that 65 businesses will be on hand to pass out candy and other goodies to the kids. The Lima Police Chief Angel Cortez wanted to do a big community-wide event that would be safe for everyone for Halloween. So they came up with the idea for the Trunk or Treat and they are looking to have a big crowd for their first time out.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States and a new event in Lima is hoping to raise awareness and funds to fight it. The Lima Heart Walk took its first steps at the Allen County Fairgrounds and raised over $33,000 for the American Heart Association. The money will be used locally and nationally to fund research on heart disease and programs to help people who suffer with it. While Sunday's walk got people’s hearts pumping, the mission is not over for the organizers who would like to see more happen locally to fight the disease.
