A pedestrian was hospitalized after an accident late this morning on Elizabeth Street.
Oden walked the mayor through the use of the APS system, which includes an audible tone and voice instruction when the button is pushed. The system lets pedestrians know whether it is safe to cross, which direction they are crossing, and when to wait. The crosswalks also include tactile brick pads, allowing individuals to feel when they are within the crosswalk zone.
“This is really an exciting, straightforward way to show the streetscape improvements that will be coming to downtown, and to allow the public to supply their input and comment,” said Lima City Engineer Ian Kohli.
The initiative, part of the Mayor’s Innovation Project, is designed to help cities create safer, healthier, and more connected communities.
Tuesday night, a man from Findlay was killed while walking along I-75. The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that Troopers say that just before 7 p.m., 69-year-old Daniel Soloman of Findlay was struck while walking across the highway in the middle lane by 34-year-old Leroy Newson of Detroit. Soloman was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
October 21, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Transportation: COLUMBUS – Since 2009, pedestrian deaths have been on the rise, hitting an all-time high in 2021 with 176 people killed. However, Ohio has recorded a steady decline of 6% in 2022 and 9% in 2023 with 165 and 150 pedestrian deaths, respectively. Through August, pedestrian deaths this year were also down 17% to 84. Of 150 pedestrian deaths in Ohio last year, 103 occurred after dark. So far this year, there have been 84 pedestrian deaths, 73 of which occurred during dusk, dawn, or nighttime conditions.
An incident involving a person crossing the busy road at Faurot Avenue and South Metcalf Street occurred around 4 p.m. in Lima. First responders arrived on the scene to escort the injured pedestrian up to Mercy Health St. Rita's. According to an eyewitness, the person walking was seen on the ground, visibly bleeding while going in and out of consciousness, with a few noticeable injuries, upon being taken to the hospital. We will update as more information becomes available.
They call it human-powered transportation, and it's important that municipalities know how it is used in the communities. Federally funded projects that include signage, crosswalks, changes in land use, and other infrastructure issues are determined from this data. The Allen County Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force is gearing up for its fall count and looking for volunteers. No experience is needed as you are assigned an area to watch for 2 hours and keep a tally of people who are riding bikes, walking, using scooters, or any other method of human-powered transportation.
June 28, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol: Paulding – The Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on CR138 west of TR117 in Paulding County, Jackson Township, at approximately 10:35 P.M. on June 27, 2024. A 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, operated by Jessica Renee Sauder, 33 years of age, of Paulding, was traveling eastbound on CR138. Christopher Lynn Smith, 44 years of age, of Paulding, was walking eastbound on CR138, in the eastbound lane of travel, and was struck by Miss Sauder’s vehicle. Mr. Smith was transported to the Paulding County Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The crash remains under investigation at this time.
Lima Police, the Lima Fire Department, and the Allen County Sheriff responded to a call that a male had been struck by a vehicle while crossing the Market Street and Nixon Avenue intersection. The driver and a witness were interviewed on scene and the victim was transported to the hospital with injuries, but in stable condition.
