LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Mayor Sharetta Smith has been selected as one of only 12 mayors across the country to participate in the National Pedestrian Safety Leadership Program.

Lima mayor selected for national pedestrian safety program

The initiative, part of the Mayor’s Innovation Project, is designed to help cities create safer, healthier, and more connected communities. Smith said the city has several ongoing and future projects — including the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program and improvements along Cable Road — that could benefit from insights gained through the program.

“Myself and the city engineer, Ian Kohli, are taking advantage of this opportunity to learn how we can continue here in the city of Lima to design our streets in a way that we put pedestrian safety above car mobility,” Smith said.

The program is sponsored by Smart Growth America and the Mayor’s Innovation Project. Smith added that she looks forward to hearing how other mayors and their administrations are addressing pedestrian safety in their communities.
