Established in 1953 as the Lima and Allen County Clinic, the center has undergone several name changes before officially becoming the Lima Children’s Developmental Center in 1996. It remains the only private, non-profit early intervention and preschool program for special needs children in Allen County.

They have locations around the county to provide free, comprehensive programming for children and their families and are currently taking applications. Allen County Head Start and Early Head Start are programs under the West Ohio Community Action Partnership that work with children from birth to 5 years of age to get them ready for school. The program is for low-income families to provide social, emotional, and intellectual growth to their children. They not only work in the classroom but also offer home visits to provide support in parenting skills.

Staff from Lima City Schools were out early Saturday morning informing the community about their new preschool expansion.

Throughout the morning dozens of shoppers at Ruler Foods, and dozens of other locations, were met with smiling faces and small red bags. Each red bag was filled with new information about Lima City School's preschool expansion.

Lima City School District announced today the expansion of their preschool program in an effort to reach more children in the area. Beginning this fall, preschool students within the district boundaries will be eligible for busing to preschool as well as more full day options. Freedom and Independence elementary schools  will offer full day service. Unity and Heritage schools will offer full and half days. Tuition will be based on federal poverty guidelines and can be as low as $12 a month. School officials pressed the importance of starting young kids in school, citing brain development.
