May 20, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Rail Development Commission: On May 16, 2024, the Ohio Rail Development Commission approved a grant in the amount of $1,230,025 to RJ Corman Railroad to help with the rehabilitation of two of the railroad’s lines: Greenville and Spencerville-Elgin. The total project cost is estimated at more than $2.4 million. RJ Corman’s Western Ohio Lines consist of several lines across the region, among them the Spencerville-Elgin (SPEG) Line and Greenville Line. The 20-mile SPEG Line begins in Lima and extends to Elgin in southeastern Van Wert County. The 12-mile Greenville Line connects Greenville with a CSX interchange in Ansonia.

The week is dedicated as a reminder to Ohioans to practice safety around all rail crossings. Every three hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. Many crashes at railroad crossings occur because motorists fail to stop at the crossing, drive around the gates, or stop/stall on the tracks.

The Allen County Engineers Office is still working on quite a few projects that are causing some street closures that will affect motorists. The 1.2-million-dollar Buckeye Road widening project is underway with lane restrictions near Fort Amanda Road. Starting Monday, Buckeye Road between McClain and South Dixie Highway will be closed for approximately 30 days to reconstruct the roadway and railroad crossing.
This Thursday and Friday the Indiana and Ohio Railroad will be reconstructing the crossing on North Street at Sugar Street. It is an at grade crossing that will be fixed with the construction. Detours for westbound traffic begins at Roberts Road and for eastbound traffic it is at Jackson Street. The crossing is scheduled to back open sometime on Friday.
