Many community members voiced strong concerns Monday night about a major proposed rate increase to their natural gas bills. The strong oppositions were voiced against Enbridge Gas Ohio, formerly Dominion Energy, and their plans to increase natural gas rates. According to the Office of the Ohio Consumers' Counsel, "Enbridge Gas Ohio is asking the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio for a 30% hike in what it charges consumers for natural gas distribution service." Inside Lima Senior, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio held a formal public hearing where several community members shared their concerns.

Getting some of your mailing and shipping done with the United States Postal Service is now a little more expensive. New postage rates went into effect yesterday. Stamp prices are up again, the second time in six months, to 63 cents from 60 cents. Don't worry, you can still use your old stamps now despite the price increases.

Committee members heard a proposal to raise the Storm Water Utility rate to meet rising costs of labor, equipment, and materials. A motion was passed to refer the issue to the full city council, where it will be considered further. If the proposal is accepted, the monthly rate would increase from $5.27 to $5.90 over the next five years.

The other main concern of the meeting was street parking on narrow roadways. Several neighborhoods were mentioned where cars parked on both sides of the street don't leave enough room for snowplows and emergency vehicles to safely get through. The Public Works Director, Kirk Niemeyer, wants to remind residents that there are rules in place for street parking when it snows.

Ohio Northern University Law graduates who sat for the Ohio bar exam in the summer of 2022 collectively earned one of the highest passage rates compared to those from other colleges, at 81 percent. According to Kelly Stevens, ONU bar success coordinator, this cohort placed third, just behind Case Western Reserve University and The Ohio State University.

Representatives from the chamber energy program put on a seminar for people to learn more about how to save money on electric and natural gas costs. They talked about knowing the ends and out of contracts with energy providers to make sure you are not costing yourself more money. But it all starts with understanding what rate you are paying.

In the first six months of 2022, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s has seen an above average of 14 suicide attempts per month, which is on pace to pass any yearly total since 2017. With September being Suicide Awareness Month, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s is reminding the community to take time to listen and reach out for help.

Half of the people killed last summer were not the driver of the vehicle. Fatal crashes involving teen drivers double during the summer months, so law enforcement says it is important for parents to talk to their young drivers about safety when they are on the road.
