Dangerously high temperatures continue to impact much of the Midwest, including our region. The American Red Cross of the Indiana Region urges everyone to take three critical actions to stay safe.

A two-alarm fire severely damages a south Lima home. Lima firefighters were called out to 633 S. Scott Street just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Fire officials say the fire started in the rear of the home, where the smoke and fire did the most damage. The fire reached the attic. No one was home when the fire started, but the Red Cross was called in to assist the people that lived there.

There remains a national shortage of blood and the American Red Cross teamed up with the Ohio State University in Lima, urging local residents to roll up their sleeves. The summer blood drive was held at the Perry Webb Building on campus Wednesday and was open to the public. Over the last 20 years, the number of people donating blood through the Red Cross has fallen by nearly 40%. People who came to donate at the branch received a Red Cross umbrella and with a valid e-mail also received an e-gift card for a movie pass from Fandango.

Students from the National Honors Society at Bath teamed up with the Red Cross to host a blood drive in memory of Mariah Ross. Ross passed away last year in June. She was the food service supervisor for Bath Local Schools as well as an involved member of the Bath community.

The Zero to Hero training prepared future volunteers to help victims of disasters in our area. These volunteers typically respond to house fires, floods, and severe winter weather, where they provide supplies and comfort to people experiencing a crisis.

The blood drive welcomed walk-ins and appointments. Students along with the public were invited. The Elida FFA says sparking leadership and making a positive difference in students is just part of their mission and hopes this leads others to become regular donors. The students we spoke to say the process is easy and it feels good to give something that could give someone another holiday season with their family.

The organization is urging blood and platelet donors to give now in order to fight against a severe shortage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is predicting a serious spread of flu this year and is already reporting spikes in cases in several states. Allen County Public Health is also urging residents to practice more caution in order to avoid a serious spread in the local area.
