The American Red Cross is expecting that the current blood shortage could be worsened due to a predicted severe flu season.
The organization is urging blood and platelet donors to give now in order to fight against a severe shortage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is predicting a serious spread of flu this year and is already reporting spikes in cases in several states. Allen County Public Health is also urging residents to practice more caution in order to avoid a serious spread in the local area.
"We're already starting to see influenza takeoff in Ohio. In the latest report that they had there was a 300% jump in influenza hospitalizations. This is early for us so we're starting to see that take an impact. We are anticipating that increase aim flu cases is coming here soon if you haven't already get your flu shot," commented Brandon Fischer, Allen County Health Commissioner.
The Red Cross also says that there is no waiting period to donate blood or platelets after receiving a flu shot.
