An Auglaize County campground is glad to be open on Memorial Day after an EF-3 tornado hit them a little over two months ago. Glacier Hills Lakes officially opened for business today. They weren't sure if they'd be ready for the holiday after nearly 100 campsites sustained damage from the tornado.
The Glacier Hill Lakes RV Resort and several surrounding houses southeast of Wapakoneta were struck last night. Houses lost entire walls and roofs, while many trailers and RVs were blown at least several feet and flipped over. Residents report that the resort's main office is mostly gone. One woman said that she had been driving to check on family in the area when she watched the funnel cloud drop to the ground.
The Lima Fire Department was able to save a house from catching on fire after an RV went up in flames in the backyard. Just before 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, the Lima Fire Department was called out to the 500 block of Nye Street for a Winnebago that was engulfed in flames. According to fire officials, no one was in the vehicle when they arrived and they were able to put the fire out quickly. Firefighters did keep the fire from spreading to the nearby home, but it did suffer heat damage.
One person is in the hospital after an accident on State Route 30 in Allen County this afternoon.
