Care Access is looking for individuals to take part in a medical screening that could save lives. They are looking for those who are underserved in clinical trials, such as the African-American and Hispanic populations, to be screened for a specific type of cholesterol known as lipoprotein (a). It can affect 1 in every 5 people, and for African Americans, it can be 1 in every 3. It's part of the 'bad' cholesterol, and elevated levels of it can put individuals three times more at risk for heart disease and stroke.

There are several routine medical screenings adults should be keeping up with in the new year. Getting your cholesterol checked will let you know if you need to make any changes to avoid serious health issues like a heart attack or stroke. According to doctors, knowing if you have prediabetes is crucial so you can make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.

Events like the "Healthy Families Expo" allow Activate Allen County to gather statistics and educate people on healthy lifestyle choices. It also gets individuals connected with services that may not have been available to them before this opportunity. The expo is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Civic Center in Lima's town square. It's a free family-friendly event.

The Lima Rotary Club holds its Fall Blood Clinic on Saturday, November 5 from 6:30am-9:30am at Senior Citizen Services, 3400 W. Elm Street. Hundreds of people attend the clinic each year to receive low-cost blood screenings from Lima Memorial Laboratory Services which includes: CMP, Lipid Panel, Renal Panel, Hepatic Panel, CBC, TSH, PSA, HA1C, VITD, FE, and URIC.

The Community Developmental Screening has a new partner and new location to help parents see if their child is on track.  The Early Intervention Specialists at the Allen County Board of DD and Rhodes State College are teaming up to put on the biannual screenings at the Borra Center for Health Sciences in downtown Lima.  The screenings are for children birth to five years old. Parents were able to have their kids checked in nine different categories, including hearing, vision, speech, and motor skills.  Which gives them the chance to address any concerns that they have. Besides being a great resource for parents, the developmental screening is a benefit to Rhodes’ students too.

The clinic was set up at Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church providing health screenings for blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, plus the COVID vaccine. No appointments were necessary with the goal of providing early detection of potential health concerns and breaking stigmas about healthcare in our community.

A mobile health clinic rolls into Lima to give people an idea on just how healthy they are.   The clinic was set up at St. Gerard Sunday afternoon   and was made possible because of a partnership between the West Central Ohio Health Ministries Program, Allen County Public Health, and Lima Memorial Health System.  The clinic offered screenings for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure, plus offered the COVID vaccine.  The organizers thought that this was an important service to bring to the Lima area.
