LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A new piece of technology will allow Lima Memorial to more easily detect breast cancer in denser tissue.
Lima Memorial Health System will now be offering screenings with the Invenia Automated Breast Ultrasound System, which is designed to allow 3D mammography screenings for women with dense breast tissue. A normal mammogram machine may not provide an accurate screening in dense tissue, so adding this machine means that residents don't have to travel to Columbus and Cleveland.
"It does expand our services, and we are the first in the region to offer it, and we are very very excited about it. The clinical trials that are out right now shows that about 35% more cancers can be detected when we add this modality yearly screening mammogram. So if we are able to find 35% more cancers that otherwise we may have not have seen, it's going to really benefit the women in our community," said Darlene Weyer, medical director of the women's imaging center.
Weyer recommends that every woman receives yearly mammograms. You can contact Lima Memorial Women's Wellness Center to schedule your next appointment.
