January 14, 2025, Press Release from the City of Lima:Â Here are some tips to make snow plowing for our Streets Division more effective and safe: Park vehicles off of the street if possible. If cars must remain parked on the street, please park cars along one side. Snow plows may be unable to maneuver down narrow streets with cars parked on both sides, hindering their ability to remove snow in a timely manner. Do not plow snow from the driveway into the street.
But the pattern of the storm has not been consistent, sometimes we will get a stretch of flurries, other times, periods of calm. But the weather can change at just a minute's notice. There is plenty of snow to plow at restaurant parking lots, sidewalks, and more. Contractors have been busy helping clear out areas that the city and county cannot get to.
Plows are getting a once over and fluids getting topped off before they start tackling the roads when the first snowflake falls early Wednesday morning. They also had tanker trucks out, putting salt brine on the primary roads to help clear them later. With heavy wet snow expected, the trucks will be moving slower, so District 1 officials ask that you give the snow plows their space.
The Ohio Department of Transportation says that roadways will take more time to properly clear off due to high winds and low visibility. ODOT Drivers are trying their best to lay down material to clear off ice and snow but the weather is not fully cooperating.
"With the temperatures being as cold as they are and the wind, we are probably not going to be able to put a lot of material, salt-wise, down," said Eric Burgei, Allen County Highway Maintenance Foreman. "So there are going to be some slick spots and stuff we are probably not going to be able to take care of until temperatures get a little warmer and the wind quits."
Staying ahead of the snow was the key as both the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Allen County Engineer's Office sent out their crews to get the roads ready. Behind the garage at ODOT District 1, there's 4,200 tons of salt that will be used throughout the season to help with the road clearing process.
Its that time of year when drivers must begin to share the road with snow plows once again.
