Organizers say it's unlike anything else in the Lima region. It's an opportunity to share ideas that follow strict guidelines of no political, religious, or corporate agendas, and each speaker is fact-checked. The theme of humanity can encompass many topics and eight speakers will be presenting one that is near to them.
The commencement speaker was Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger, whose company announced this year a $20 billion investment in Ohio to build factories to make semiconductor chips. Gelsinger was given an honorary doctorate for engineering. Plus, outgoing Senator Rob Portman also received an honorary doctorate for public service from Ohio State. Among all the graduates, 700 were from the college of nursing, which is a record number for a single graduating class from that particular college.
Students participated in a 5K in order to promote positive addiction on Friday. Lima Catholic Schools hosted their 39th Annual Positive Addiction Race at St. Charles School. The theme of the race is to develop wholesome addictions as opposed to negative addictions to drugs and alcohol. All week, students were able to participate in workshops and learn valuable information on alternatives to drugs and alcohol.
Students who are excelling academically were recognized earlier this evening at Lima Central Catholic High School. About 40 sophomores, juniors, and seniors were awarded an academic letter, which is earned after a student maintains a 3.6 cumulative GPA through the third quarter of the school year.
John Lewis was first elected in 1986 and served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives until his death in 2020. He was a civil rights activist and in the 60’s he worked to end legalized segregation and led the first walk from Selma to Montgomery over the Edmund Pettus Bridge that became known as “Bloody Sunday” when state troopers and police attacked the marchers including Lewis. Lima Councilman Derry Glenn wanting to keep Lewis’s legacy alive has set a day of remembrance on Sunday, February 27th.
