Allen East sixth graders in a math intervention class raised $979 for the Veterans Food Pantry of Northwest Ohio through a creative “Math-A-Thon” fundraiser. Students collected pledges based on the number of math problems they answered correctly, combining academics with community service.
The Veterans Food Pantry of Northwest Ohio received more than $60,000 from Good Food Restaurants Charities, led by restaurateur John Heaphy. The donation will help support a new facility and expand services for veterans in the region.
Erica Bingmon, a Day One advocate with Crime Victim Services, said labor trafficking often includes situations where individuals do not have control of their personal documents, such as identification cards, Social Security cards, or food stamp cards. “It’s important for employers to look out for those indicators in their employees and even their employees’ children,” Bingmon said.
Thousands of dollars were donated to a local food pantry aiming to ensure area veterans do not go hungry. A little over $3,700 was donated to the Veterans Food Pantry of Northwest Ohio. The money was raised by Reineke Family Dealerships and the Lima UAW Local 1219 during their 7th annual Veterans’ Car Show earlier in October.

The pantry serves nearly 800 veterans and their families each month from its location on North Street in Lima. While the service will remain the same, the location will not. The property was sold by Mercy Health St. Rita’s, and pantry leaders are now seeking a new building.
The 2025 Jefferson Award winners from our region were recognized Tuesday night at a banquet inside the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center. The 2025 Jefferson Awards Gold Medal winner was Betsy Potts with the Veterans Food Pantry of Northwest Ohio.
