Sidney,OH (WLIO) — Lehman Catholic snapped a 51-year losing streak against St. John’s with a high-scoring 56-35 victory in the seventh edition of the Catholic Bowl rivalry on Friday night.

The two teams had met only twice in the last decade, with St. John’s winning both previous matchups, including last season’s opener, 54-27. But this year, defense took a backseat as both teams put up big numbers.

Lehman Catholic led 28-14 entering the third quarter before extending its lead when Turner Lachey connected with Evan O’Leary for a touchdown. Despite a brief cramp, Lachey was able to finish the play, pushing the Cavaliers’ lead to 36-20 after a successful two-point conversion.

St. John’s responded with a touchdown of their own as Drake Fittro found a hole and leaped into the end zone, narrowing the gap to 36-28 after a two-point conversion.

A controversial moment late in the game saw Lachey throw deep to Carson Stemen, who made a spectacular catch for a touchdown. After a lengthy review, officials upheld the score, increasing Lehman Catholic’s lead to 42-28.

Lehman Catholic went on to secure the win, their first over St. John’s since 1971, sealing the game at 56-35.
