ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) — Shawnee continued its recent dominance over Elida on the hardwood, rolling past the Bulldogs 67-37 in a Western Buckeye League showdown at the Elida Fieldhouse.
The Indians entered the night having won five straight games against Elida — and 15 of the previous 16 meetings — and showed why early on. Luke Marshall set the tone in the opening quarter, grabbing an offensive rebound and finishing through contact before converting again moments later after Shawnee turned defense into offense.
Elida looked to respond behind Marcus Hill, who used his speed to create offense, scoring the Bulldogs’ first points with a smooth euro-step. Hill later found Brady Bruin in transition for an easy bucket as Elida tried to gain some momentum.
Shawnee, however, quickly pulled away. Trevick Bertke energized the crowd with a steal and a thunderous dunk plus the foul — a highlight-reel moment that shifted the momentum firmly in the Indians’ favor. Jonathan Payne and Hill continued to battle for Elida, but Shawnee’s balance and pressure proved too much.
Late in the game, Beckett Bertke sealed the win by pushing the pace off a rebound and lobbing it up to his brother for an and-one finish, putting an exclamation point on the victory.
With the win, Shawnee makes it six straight victories over Elida and continues to build momentum in Western Buckeye League play. Elida remains in search of its first win of the season.
Final score: Shawnee 67, Elida 37
