LIMA, OH (WLIO) - March is developmental disabilities awareness month, and the Ohio Early Intervention along with the Allen County Board of DD are taking steps to help families ensure their child is developmentally on track.

On Tuesday afternoon at Marimor School, free community developmental screenings were held for children ages birth to five years. These screenings assessed various aspects of development including speech, hearing, vision, dental, autism, gross, and fine motor skills. Through early intervention, the Board of DD says there are plenty of resources available for parents.

"If a child is delayed or if a parent is worried, we don't want them to worry but we don't want them to wait, so the key is the earlier that we can intervene and we can provide those supports, and I think that's the best kept secret here is at the Allen County Board of DD provides that early intervention support to our birth to three families, and as a child turns three, we transition them to the school district if the child needs continued support," says Rachael Staley, Director of Early Intervention, Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Staley says if parents are wondering what they can be doing at home, the best thing to do is simply play with their child.
