LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — What began as a learning environment for children nearly 30 years ago has grown into a beloved community destination for visitors of all ages.

Since its inception in 1996, the Allen County Children’s Garden has continued to evolve, with organizers describing it as a constant work in progress. Much like any garden, supporters say there is always something new to create, maintain or improve.

Allen County Children’s Garden celebrates 30 years of growth and community impact

The history and impact of the garden were highlighted Tuesday during the first installment of the Allen County Master Gardeners’ Summer Brown Bag Series. The weekly educational program is held at 12:15 p.m. each Tuesday through early fall in the Gayle Edwards Gazebo.

Tuesday’s presentation focused on the garden’s nearly three decades of growth and the experiences it provides for children and adults alike.

“You just see the smiles on the faces. They The kids love it and it's uh especially when you see a school bus get out with a whole group of 30-40 kids and they just run wild. They love the adventure of it. They love the little hidden spots. We tried to make it so uh it was a kids world although we have kids in our 90s that love it just as well,” said Teresa Diehl, an Allen County Master Gardener.

Organizers noted that 30 people attended the presentation, fittingly coinciding with the garden’s 30th anniversary celebration.

To commemorate the milestone, the Allen County Master Gardeners will host the return of their butterfly release event on Sept. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Allen County Children’s Garden. The Ohio State University Bug Mobile will also be on site.

The event is free and open to the public.
