LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - As the Ohio Legislature nears the end of the state budget cycle, Allen County Democrats are learning how they can make their voices heard regarding their concerns.

The policy director for Honesty for Ohio Education spoke at the Allen County Democrats’ "Lunch and Learn" event, highlighting how the state’s education system may be impacted by decisions made in the budget. Rachel Coyle, policy director for the organization, encouraged residents to contact their state lawmakers to share their opinions.

"She says at the state level, not many people make that effort, and a small group that does make contact could have a huge impact."

Coyle emphasized the importance of the budget, calling it a critical document that determines how taxpayer dollars are spent across Ohio.

"So it's incredibly important. It's a moral document. It decides what the state cares about, and we think they should care about the kids. We think they should focus on public schools and funding for education and libraries. And the fight right now is over whether or not those things should be the priority," said Coyle.

The state budget is still being worked out in committee before it moves to the House and Senate for a vote. The governor must sign the budget by the June 30 deadline, as the state’s new fiscal year begins on July 1.
