LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Ohio, and Allen County Children Services is working to “paint the town blue.”

Staff and supporters wore blue shirts Wednesday to raise awareness for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. The agency sold 223 shirts this year, with proceeds supporting its annual “Community for Kids” luncheon, which recognizes the organization's local partners.

Officials say neglect can include failing to meet a child’s basic needs, while abuse involves actual or potential harm, including physical, emotional or sexual harm. Allen County Children Services says the goal is to keep the public aware of the signs and encourage people to speak up.

"We want people to be aware that child abuse does take place, and neglect as well, in our community.", said Greg Sowinski, communications coordinator, Allen County Children Services. "When that happens, we want the community to partner with us, and we want them to inform us if something's happening. A lot of times, it's not something really major that's happening. It's something that can be addressed. We can help the families out."

Allen County Children Services urges anyone who suspects abuse or neglect to report it by calling 419-227-8590.
