LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen County Port Authority has received nearly $1 million in state funding to prepare several properties for potential future redevelopment projects.
The funding comes through Ohio’s Brownfield Grant Program, which helps communities clean up contaminated properties. The grants are used to address issues such as asbestos in older buildings and soil contamination left behind by previous businesses.
The Port Authority received another round of funding to continue cleanup efforts at the former Ed-Co property on Kibby Street. Additional funding will also support an environmental site assessment for another nearby property.
The organization also secured money to continue cleanup work at the former Republic Creosote property on Nuebrecht Road.
“Neubrecht Road near I-75, lots of development underway out there and that site is about a 55-acre site. We did an assessment on that with the first grant and this follow-up grant will now do some remediation as well. Businesses come in and they want new clean properties but we have an awful lot of properties around the county that need cleanup in an effort to do some redevelopment," said Cindy Leis, CEO and president of the Allen Economic Development Group.
Since launching in 2021, the Brownfield Grant Program has awarded nearly $780 million statewide to help prepare properties for redevelopment opportunities.
