LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Boys and Girls Club at the Bradfield Center kicked off this week their summer filled with fun, learning and personal growth for dozens of local students.

Approximately 80 students are participating in the club's nine-week summer program, which is designed to help children build connections with their peers while taking part in a variety of activities, including games, sports and arts programs.

The summer program will continue through July 31.

In addition to recreational opportunities, the program focuses on teaching life skills that participants can use well beyond the summer months. Staff members work with students on social-emotional learning, self-awareness and self-regulation while also introducing practical skills such as cooking and safety education.

“A lot of them have kind of difficulties with placing their emotions and we're also teaching them how to do SELs and how to self-regulate and have self-awareness. We're trying to give them the skills for the rest of their lives. We also teach them different skills far as culinary, cooking, safety, anything that we can do to make them better as a person and individually, that's our goal,” says Gina Daughtery, Boys and Girls Club at Bradfield Center.

Organizers say the combination of educational opportunities and recreational activities helps students develop confidence, relationships and skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.
