LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Allen County Emergency Management Agency is reminding people to avoid leaving your child or dog unattended in your car over the summer, as temperatures can reach a dangerous level in mere moments.

Cars parked directly in the sunlight can reach temperatures of over 150 degrees and pose a severe threat to anyone in them, including kids, pets, and the elderly.

Drivers are advised to keep water in their cars at all times, avoid parking in direct sunlight, and have their air conditioner running whenever they can to counteract the heat.

EMA warns hot cars can become deadly in minutes during summer heat

Cars parked directly in the sunlight can reach temperatures of over 150 degrees and pose a severe threat to anyone in them, including kids, pets, and the elderly.

Officials with the EMA say that having ways to cool down are necessary for anyone planning on traveling.

"Let's say you're standing on the side of the road or in traffic - a lot of folks travel this time of year, and depending on where you going, you could be sitting in standstill traffic," said Drew Munshower, EMA Deputy Director. "Just be making sure you have those necessary necessities to ensure that you are safe, hydrated, and remaining healthy."

Officials with the EMA are also monitoring the air quality index for any possible ozone alerts, which could increase the danger that the heat already poses.

No alerts have been issued yet, but levels are still being monitored in case of any potential danger.
