Ground is broken for the Allen County 9/11 Memorial in Downtown Lima

The monument will feature several pieces from the crash site displayed alongside three flags in the park.

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - In the last few decades, there are few dates with more meaning to Americans than September 11th, 2001.

Since 2017, the Allen County 9/11 Memorial Foundation has raised roughly $60,000 to build a monument to keep the memory of 9/11 alive. Their hard work and persistence lead us to now, as the Lima community came together for the groundbreaking for the 9/11 memorial, which will be located downtown at the Greater Lima Region Park and Amphitheater. The monument  will feature several pieces from Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, P.A., displayed alongside three flags in the park.

"With that tragedy came a unity in our country that we have yet to see again, and I hope that sometimes people can take a look at that, remember that unity, and share that with our family members and the future generations, so they know what happened that day," said Jeffrey Rosebrock, president of the Allen County 9/11 Memorial Foundation. "How it impacted us, how it changed our lives and the perspective of each and every one of us that was present for that day."

The dedication is on track to be ready just in time for September 11th later this year.
