LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – They creep, crawl, and some even slither. They are "herptiles," and Thursday they were the center of attention at Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks as part of the park district's Home School Series.
"Herp, Herp, Hurray!" introduced children to the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians. The term "herptile" encompasses both reptiles and amphibians, stemming from the study of these creatures, known as herpetology. The word originates from the Greek term for "crawling things."
Participants spent the day learning about the differences and similarities between reptiles and amphibians before heading out on a search for native "herps" in Ohio.
Lindsey Gallaugher, a naturalist with the Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District, expressed her passion for teaching the program. “I love to choose topics that I enjoy talking about, and the kids bring their own passion to it. So I do have a program for all the kids, but they end up teaching me things. And I love to see their excitement when we find something—even I get excited when we find something unexpected."
The event is just one of many educational programs the park district offers. Naturalists say these hands-on experiences are educational for all ages. To learn more about the park's educational programs, visit their website at jampd.com.
