LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The annual “I Have a Dream” Awards Banquet is just over one month away and will once again honor individuals who have made a lasting impact on the Lima community.

The banquet was founded 44 years ago by 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn, before there was a national holiday recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Glenn says the idea began after a college professor challenged students to find ways to keep Dr. King’s spirit alive.

On Jan. 18, community members will be recognized for their current service, with awards who are named after people who dedicated to improving the Lima area throughout its history.

On Jan. 18, community members will be recognized for their current service, with awards who are named after people who dedicated to improving the Lima area throughout its history.

“So, a lot of folks in Lima have received an award, and we always make sure the people that keep the dream alive. You know, we got the Mary Coleman award, the Furl Williams award, the Larry Watkins, Miss Newsome, Alberta. Shurelds award. These are pioneers in our city. We recognize them on that day, as people keep the same footstep they was doing, just like Martin Luther King,” says Derry Glenn, “I Have a Dream” Award Banquet.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Lima City Schools Superintendent Andre Rudolph.

“For individuals who maybe you haven't heard him, or you haven't heard him talk about Lima city schools, especially in regards to what his plans are, and certainly what their focus is as a district, then this will be your chance to come out and see him and meet him, and get a chance to introduce him to yourself, as well as whatever youth that you have who are attending Lima City School District. So, I always think that that's important for families and for communities, to be able to meet the individuals who are sitting in these particular leadership roles and leadership places,” says Dr. Lisa Bradley Glenn, “I Have a Dream” Awards Banquet.

Glenn says nominations are still being accepted for this year’s awards and encourages residents to reach out if they know someone who continues to make the Lima area a better place while keeping Dr. King’s dream alive.
