LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lupus, an autoimmune disease often described as feeling like being hit by a truck every day, has no known cure and affects millions of Americans. In recognition of Lupus Awareness Month, Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith issued a proclamation urging residents to learn more about the disease.
According to the Lupus Foundation of America, an estimated 1.5 million Americans live with lupus, and 90% of those diagnosed are women. However, the disease also affects men and children.
“The foundation has been in existence for quite a few years,” said Mike Vollmar, patient navigator for the Lupus Foundation of America – Greater Ohio Chapter. “We’ve had funding from the state of Ohio for several years. This year, they are choosing not to reinstate, not to include that. So, we’d like people to contact their state senators to ask them to reinstate that.”
Foundation leaders are concerned about future support and the potential impact of state funding cuts on services and outreach.
To raise funds and awareness, the Greater Ohio Chapter of the Lupus Foundation will host a “Dine and Donate” fundraiser at the Beer Barrel on Harding Highway on Tuesday, May 13, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests who mention they are supporting the foundation will have 15% of their bill donated to the organization.
