Mayor Smith emphasized the importance of collaboration in meeting residents’ needs. “So one of the things that I heard today is that if an individual signs up that lives near to Apollo, then they're referred to Apollo, but if they live near Lima City Schools, they're referred to Lima City Schools. And so it's important to have different on-ramps for services in our communities, for individuals,” she said.
"You are not alone. Just allow people to really realize how much of a difference that it makes in your life, and tell them that just because you're not able to see it, it's truly still impacting, and realize that other people, they struggle more than you may think," Etzkorn said.
“We challenged our senior DECA members to create micro business plans,” Gipson said. “We presented them to ‘sharks’ who approved the ideas, and then we turned them into real products—like dog treats, hair combs, car air fresheners—and sold them at the event to the community.”
According to the Lupus Foundation of America, an estimated 1.5 million Americans live with lupus, and 90% of those diagnosed are women. However, the disease also affects men and children.

The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council and Lima City Schools want to change that statistic. This week is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith presented them with a proclamation encouraging individuals struggling with basic academic skills to take advantage of the services offered by these two programs. Reading is something anyone can do, and we as a community need to de-stigmatize the issue of adult literacy.
