CELINA, Ohio (WLIO) - February is Career Technical Education Month, and the Mercer and Auglaize County Commissioners are showing their support at Tri Star Career Compact.

The commissioners signed a proclamation in honor of the month displaying their support for local students pursuing career tech. A number of Tri Star students also shared with the commissioners what programs they are pursuing. The county commissioners then toured the facility to see the work students complete. On Tuesday, we spoke with two students from Marion Local and St. Henry about the impact career tech has had on them and with an Auglaize County Commissioner of how beneficial these programs are for the community.

“We are CNA certified, certified nursing assistant, and with that, we just learn a lot of, in my opinion, nursing aspects, and I want to become a nurse. So, that's helped a lot, and I think that will help me when I advance to college,” says Alanna Mescher, St. Henry Senior in the Med Prep program.

“I agree with what Alanna has said, and I feel like this program has allowed me to fully understand what the medical field is going to be like, and that showed that I truly do want to go into the medical field,” says Elise Heitkamp, Marion Local Senior in the Med Prep program.

“By coming to Tri Star, they get to experience a lot of different job skills and see different local jobs that are available that don't necessarily take a full 4-year college education, good jobs, good wages... and we need them in this area. We're always looking for good people to do those hands-on type jobs that you don't normally get at maybe a 4-year university,” says David Bambauer, Auglaize County Commissioner.

Tri Star is having spirit week this week to continue celebrating Career Tech Month.
