LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Lima City Council had a full agenda Monday night, including two key ordinances that could impact the city’s future development and educational opportunities.

One ordinance approved a motion for the mayor to accept a $20,000 gift from the Lima Astronomical Society to support improvements at the Schoonover Observatory. The funds will be used to enhance the facility and its programming.

"We're looking at better equipment to enhance program services. We're looking at some on-site improvements to enhance accessibility. This was the second in a series of steps to be able to implement the use of those funds and will be coming back to council," said Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith.

Another ordinance passed Monday authorized the mayor to enter into contract negotiations with Geyde Development for the potential redevelopment of the Riverfront One property.

"We're excited to be able to extend the positive momentum that is happening in the downtown further south down Main Street. So tonight's ordinance gives us the ability to enter into negotiations with a development firm," Smith said.

The proposed redevelopment would provide both residential and commercial space at the corner where the Riverfront One building currently stands.
