LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Allen County Children Services is asking taxpayers to renew the agency's $750,000 five-year levy.

Last year, Children Services was involved with 1 of 13 children in Allen County. Those numbers continue to rise due to the ongoing opiate epidemic, resulting in more than 80 percent of the child welfare cases handled involving illegal substances used by the child's custodian.

On Tuesday, 6th ward councilman Derry Glenn visited the local agency to voice his support.

"Children Services has done an outstanding job over the years, and it's just a renewal," said Glenn. "There's no new taxes involved in this, and they continue doing the great work in our county."

"Last year, we investigated over 760 reports of abuse and neglect here in Allen County - this funding allows us to continue to do our mission of ensuring children are safe," said Sarah Newland, executive director for Allen County Children Services.

The spring primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 6th.
