LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Kiwanis Club held their signature tree project on Wednesday.

Every year, the Lima Kiwanis Club holds what is known as the MacDonnell Arbor Memorial project, which is in memory of James MacDonnell who, for years, provided tree saplings to each first-grade student in Lima. Since his passing in 1991, the club has expanded the project, giving every student in Allen County a tree sapling. Members of all ages came together to bag over 1500 trees today in preparation to give them out tomorrow.

"It's mentoring ship, you know, some of the older kids having an opportunity to work with some of the younger kids, but more definitively, it's just community. You know, and I think that's the biggest thing is that spirit of stewardship. It's that spirit of understanding that when we work together toward a collective cause, hat a great gift that is," says Willie Heggins, president of the Lima Kiwanis Club.
