LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A Lima man has been sentenced to 12 to 16 years in prison for a 2022 attack on his ex-girlfriend.

Juan Fuentes, 62, was convicted of felonious assault for stabbing Catsonava Maloy outside Our Daily Bread on Oct. 4, 2022. Maloy was 53 at the time of the attack.

Court documents say the two were arguing when Maloy walked away toward her car. Fuentes followed her and slashed her several times with a box cutter.

The victim suffered severe injuries, including deep cuts to the left side of her face that began at her scalp and split her ear. She also sustained wounds to her arm and back and required 92 staples.

Maloy died in November 2024 from a stroke.

During sentencing, Maloy’s first cousin told the court the psychological trauma from the assault ultimately led to her death two years later.

“My cousin died from a stroke, but she really died because of the pain she was going through, and the scaredness she had, the way she'd never live life fully again. She never had a real life after this incident,” said Debbie Hall, the victim’s cousin.

Fuentes was scheduled to go to trial but pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault on Jan. 20. The counts were merged into one at sentencing.
