LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – With little significant rainfall predicted in the near future, the City of Lima says it is well-prepared to handle ongoing dry conditions.

Months of minimal natural rainfall have created moderate drought conditions, but city officials credit the construction of five reservoirs with ensuring an adequate water supply. Those reservoirs can hold up to 5 billion gallons of water, with the city’s average daily usage around 14 million gallons.

Lima utilities director: Water levels remain strong amid lack of rain

Mike Caprella, Lima’s utilities director, said the reservoirs are maintaining healthy levels despite the dry weather.

“We're in really good right? You know, right now we still have about 81, 82% of our total capacity in those reservoirs, so it's kind of a comfortable level for this time of year. Now. Another two months, two and a half months, we'll get the late fall rains, which we always do, and we'll top them back off. But if we don't get that, we're still in fine shape,” Caprella said.

He added that the city also pumps water from nearby rivers in the spring, when possible, to top off the reservoirs.
