COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — With just over eight months remaining in his final term, Mike DeWine says he is focused on advancing several education and child development initiatives before leaving office.

Among his top priorities is expanding the state’s use of the “science of reading,” an evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. DeWine said schools that have implemented the program are already seeing improvements in reading comprehension.

The governor also hopes to expand the Ohio SEE program statewide. The initiative, currently operating in 15 counties including Allen County, provides students with vision screenings, eye exams and free glasses if needed.

Under the program, a mobile unit visits schools to minimize disruptions to the school day while ensuring students receive care.

“We hope to expand it to all 88 counties,” DeWine said. “Students can get their eyes tested and, if needed, select glasses on-site, helping them return to class better able to see and learn.”

DeWine also highlighted the work of Fran DeWine in promoting early childhood literacy through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. More than 400,000 children in Ohio are now enrolled in the program, which provides free books to young readers.

The governor said expanding access to education resources and early intervention programs remains a key focus as his administration enters its final months.
