LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Lima City Schools Superintendent Andre Rudolph is pushing back against what he calls a false narrative surrounding public education, saying he is frustrated with claims that public schools are failing while private institutions promote vouchers to attract students.

Rudolph joined teachers, administrators, students and community supporters at a recent gathering celebrating what they call being “Spartan Proud.” The event highlighted student achievement and community impact across the district.

District leaders acknowledged ongoing challenges, including limited funding and state mandates that apply specifically to public schools.

Despite those concerns, Rudolph emphasized the district’s commitment to serving all students and families.

“I’m pro choice. I believe families should have the ability to send their students to whatever school they believe is best. I believe that all schools provide different things. What I am against is the narrative or the rhetoric that public schools are failing and that we are not creating productive members of society ready to be the next generation of leaders. That’s just a totally false narrative,” said Rudolph.

Rudolph pointed to measurable successes within the district. The senior class of 2025 earned more than $4 million in scholarships. Students have also achieved two international DECA championships, while others hold state leadership roles in programs such as Youth and Government and Educators Rising.

He said those accomplishments reflect the strength of the district and its students.

“When you actually come in our buildings and you see the success stories, and then you come in our community and you see the success stories, you’ll understand truly how powerful we actually are and what great work we actually do.”

Lima City Schools is inviting the public to see those successes firsthand. The district will host an open house at Lima Senior High School on Tuesday, March 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will include building tours, information on academic programs and a free meal prepared by Spartan Inn culinary students.
