LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Fire Department continues to strengthen its ranks as firefighters complete their probationary periods and new recruits begin their service with the department.
The department recently presented Firefighter and EMT Nathan Coulter with his badge and shield, marking the completion of his one-year probationary period, which includes extensive training and service to the city of Lima.
During the probationary period, recruits are required to rotate through multiple shifts and responsibilities to gain experience across the department. Lima Fire Chief Jack McDermitt said Coulter distinguished himself through his professionalism, initiative and reliability, noting that he was asked to assist in training other fire personnel.
Coulter is a second-generation Lima firefighter and the son of Lima Fire Department Lt. David Coulter. He said serving the community where he grew up is especially meaningful.
“I grew up in this town, and just being around the neighborhoods, the city is just something you want to serve,” Coulter said. “And I grew up in a firefighter family, so it’s kind of just all I see growing up, and it’s just a blessing to be a part of this community and to be a servant.”
In addition to recognizing Coulter, the Lima Fire Department has also welcomed four new probationary firefighters who began their journey with the department this month.
