LIMA, Ohio (WLIO)— Love was in the air today at Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks, where the theme for today’s Nature Pals class was “We Love Nature” in spirit with Valentine’s Day.
The kids created heart-themed arts and crafts to show their love for the Earth, including heart-shaped bird feeders, nature Valentine’s cards, and seed bombs to plant in the ground.
The message was to invite nature to be the kids’ Valentine and celebrate the lovely things we can find outside, even in our own backyards.

“We’re gonna go on a ‘heart hunt,’ which is where we try to look for hearts in nature. So, like maybe a rock that’s shaped like a heart, or like a heart in a tree, or, yeah, just anything we can find—leaves or lichen or puddles that are heart-shaped, just anything we can find that’s shaped like a heart out in nature,” commented Marie Walton, a naturalist for the Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District.
The Nature Pals program occurs on the first Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of each month.
The next Metro Parks District event will be an “Owl Prowl,” a nighttime hike, on Tuesday, February 11, at Kendrick Woods from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
