LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — It has been an unusually slow day at the polls as voter turnout remained low early in the day.
At American Legion Post 96, which serves Lima precincts 4-B, 6-A and 6-B — with more than 2,500 registered voters combined — only 30 ballots had been cast by noon.
While no election ever sees 100% turnout, poll workers noted the numbers were especially low compared to previous elections. According to the Allen County Board of Elections web site, in the 2024 general election, the three precincts saw just over 1,200 ballots cast. During the 2024 primary, only 281 voters turned out.
Even with past low participation, poll workers expressed surprise at the minimal engagement on Tuesday.
“Well, it started out with torrential rain this morning, and we are now up to 30 voters for three precincts, which is not what I would call a good turnout for an election,” said Ruth Hardesty, the presiding judge at the polling site.
Hardesty also noted that the limited ballot — featuring just two issues and no candidates — may have contributed to the lack of voter interest.
