LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District kicked off its summer camp season Tuesday with a colorful outdoor adventure designed for some of its youngest participants.
The two-day "Color Crazy" camp at the McElroy Environmental Center welcomed children ages 5 and 6 for a nature-focused experience centered on discovering colors found in the natural world.
Camp activities include hiking, crafts, picnics, games and story time, all designed to encourage children to explore and learn about nature in a hands-on environment.
Participants are also learning how animals use color to survive and communicate in the wild.
“And we're learning all about why animals have different colors in nature. Some are super brightly colored, some are more discreetly colored or camouflaged, and learning what animals have what colors and what it means,” said Marie Walton, naturalist with the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.
The summer camp program is one of several educational opportunities offered by the park district throughout the season.
More information about upcoming summer programs and activities is available on the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District’s website.
