ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) - Some local artists had their works put on display as St. Marys hosted their annual art fair at the high school Sunday afternoon. The event featured around 500 pieces from over 100 middle and high school students.

Art doesn’t often get the same spotlight as academics and sports, so it’s important to give these artists some recognition for their talent.

There were five mediums the students could submit to the show, including drawing, painting, and ceramics. Every genre had a first, second, and third place, but there were also other special awards they could win. This year, the event tried a slightly different format and held the show in the gym to make it more accessible.

"So in the past, we did it in the hallways, and we just kind of hung everything, and everything was kind of mixed together. It felt like a little unorganized and a little messy. So we felt like putting it in here just made it look cleaner and neater. We felt like it really showcased the kids' talent a lot better in this format," said Taryn Waesch, the high school art teacher at Saint Marys.

"I would say I talked to at least three families today who said I had no idea my child could do this, and they're one of my best students. They won awards, and it's like a shining moment for them. Where they might not normally have that shining moment," said Alicia Welker, the middle school art teacher at Saint Marys.

Both teachers were excited about how the art show turned out and look forward to next year, where they hope it will continue to grow.
