Best beards and mustaches compete to raise money for domestic violence services

FINDLAY, OH (WLIO) - A No Shave November face-off at the Findlay Brewing Co. raised money for a good cause on Sunday.

The brewery's 4th annual Beard and Mustache Competition saw 30 contestants participate in five different categories to crown the best facial hair in Findlay. Even women could enter the Whiskerina category for beards that are not grown but made out of materials like yarn or leaves. Proceeds from the contest support Findlay and Hancock County's only domestic violence non-profit organization, Open Arms.

"In the craft beer industry, there has always been this joke that anyone that brews craft beer or drinks craft beer wears flannels and always has a long beard. So we thought that it would be really funny to create this event, kind of playing off that joke. It is just something funny, and we do love our flannels and we do have a lot of beards," said Sarah Foltz, the general manager of Findlay Brewing Co.

Events like the Beard and Mustache competition are what make it possible for Open Arms to offer seven different programs to survivors, including their mobile advocacy unit.

"It's huge, it's huge to see the support from the community here in Findlay, you know, whether you have a beard or not, that you're out here and you're raising funds for the agency. It's really nice to see the support," added Ashley Ritz, the executive director of Open Arms.

Judges graded facial hair on factors like length, creativity, and craftsmanship.
