In a continued effort to stop panhandling in Lima, some signs will now serve as a reminder around town. The signs read: Don't contribute to the problem. Contribute to the solution. We first told you last month how local agencies are teaming up to help redirect the money given to panhandlers, by encouraging people to donate to a local shelter or organization instead. Lima Mayor David Berger says there are more secure ways of helping those in need than handing out money to those on the streets.
"We want to make sure that the community understands that there are alternatives that our community provides, resources in the form of both housing for emergency purposes as well as food and other kinds of employment and training services. All of those things are available," Mayor Berger said.
Mayor Berger says there are more of the signs available if anyone is interested in having one outside their business. You will just need to contact the Mayor's Office, and if you'd like to help those in need you can do so through the United Way of Lima.
