Crop conditions hardly affected by recent heat wave, approaching harvest

With temperatures soaring back into the 90's the last few days, we checked with an expert on how that could impact crops.

Curtis Young of the Van Wert OSU Extension Office said it shouldn't affect corn conditions as they begin their dry down period. It may slightly impact soybean growth, but he said that the soil in Van Wert and neighboring counties has had adequate moisture this season. What the temperature may do is call for an early harvest on corn this year, compared to recent years. Young added he expects to see a yield anywhere from average to above average for crops in his area.

"We've had very good timing for a lot of the weather we've had," Young said, the agriculture and natural resource extension educator. "Now we've not run out of moisture in the soil. We haven't had overly great quantities of moisture this year, we haven't had severe heavy downpours week after week after week."

Issues to keep an eye on, Young mentioned, were the presence of weeds and bugs around the soybeans.
