Early morning freezing rain leads to slippery travel conditions

West Central Ohio woke up to quite the wintry scene early Tuesday morning.

Freezing rain fell for several hours late last night, leading to several hundredths of an inch of ice accumulating on roadways, cars, and signs. The entire area was put under a winter weather advisory and by this morning roads were very hazardous, parking lots resembled ice rinks, and sidewalks were ice covered. Motorists could be seen driving slower than normal and taking turns with extra caution. The ice even led to numerous school delays and closings.

The Allen County Department of Engineering says they prepared and their work day began much earlier than normal. They also say freezing rain events are more costly than plain snowstorms. Daren Leis went on to say that in these freezing rain events the department will use grit for traction. Despite the ice events this season, he believes the county has enough supplies to get through the winter.
