With school out and summer officially underway, professionals at Mercy Health-St. Rita's Medical Center have noticed an increase in motor vehicle incidents involving teens and younger adults from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend in September. The drastic spike in teens brought to the hospital due to injuries sustained in car accidents has caused this period to be coined the "100 Deadliest Days of the Summer."

That is why the professionals at Mercy Health-St. Rita's have ways to potentially lower these numbers.

"If you're one of the person's friends who is driving and you see them on their phone distracted, don't be afraid to speak up. Let them know that you're putting not only putting yourselves at risk but everyone else in the car as well. I will also think about the repercussions of all of your actions; not just related to yourself, whether you get injured, but also other people out on the road too," said Collin Worthington, trauma program director at Mercy Health-St. Rita's.

Last summer, there were 67,000 crashes statewide, with nearly 400 people in those accidents being killed during the late May to early September time frame.
