LIMA, OH (WLIO) - How do spiders celebrate Halloween? By having a "web-slinging" good time! A couple of arachnids, area preschoolers, and their families did just that for this month's edition of Nature Pals.
Thursday afternoon at the McElroy Educational Center, the Nature Pals learned about spiders and how they benefit the environment through plenty of hands-on activities. The children enjoyed playing games, including "Pin the leg on the spider," before receiving a lesson on the eight-legged creatures and reading about them.
"We're going to look at the parts of the body of a spider. We have a little backpack for the abdomen, and we got a hat with eight eyes on it to go over what makes a spider different from an insect. Then, we're going to go outside, and we're going to look for webs. We have water that we can spray the webs with so that they're more easily visible. It's a peaceful way that kids can interact with nature; they can interact with the spiders," said Marie Walton, naturalist at JAMPD.
November 2nd's Nature Pals event registration is open on the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District's website at https://www.jampd.com/.
