LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima YMCA is ushering in summer by offering low-cost swim lessons for kids.
The annual "SPLASH Program" is a five-day program teaching kids ages 3 and up the basics of swimming and staying safe in water.
New swimmers learn important things like how to float, kick their legs, and how to properly wear a life jacket. The kids won't be professionals by the end of the week, but they will be more prepared for the season and any accidents that may happen.
"You never know what situation they're going to be in. You never know if they're going to get pushed into a pool or what kind of scenarios that they're going to find themselves in through the summer. And so, this way they can enjoy the water, enjoy the summer, and just be safe while they're doing it," stated Carla McPheron, aquatics director at the Lima YMCA.
McPheron says parents can begin teaching their kids to swim by starting with the basics somewhere small like a bathtub or kiddie pool. To learn more about the Lima YMCA's SPLASH program, visit https://limaymca.net/junior-splash/.
