LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With Halloween around the corner, kids got into the spooky spirit by learning about one of the holiday’s most iconic creatures: bats.
This morning’s “Going Batty” program at the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District gave children a hands-on look at the winged mammals. It’s part of the “Nature Pals” series, where kids make crafts and play games to learn about animals and the roles they play in nature.

“They were surprised to learn that bats hang upside down, and I think they were surprised to learn about all the different things that bats can eat depending on the type of bat, because some bats are going to be eating bugs. Others are pollinators. Of course, this time of year people are thinking about vampire bats, so there’s all different types of bats,” said Marie Walton, naturalist at the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.
