LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — At the end of Lima’s Memorial Day Parade route, community members had the chance to sign a representation of one of the nation’s most important documents through the traveling “We the People Project.”
The project, which began in Seattle several years ago, has been traveling across the country with a large banner representing the U.S. Constitution. Participants are invited to add their signatures and personal messages to the display as it makes stops in communities nationwide.
In addition to visiting Lima, the project has traveled throughout Ohio collecting signatures. Organizers said they hope the effort encourages people to better understand the importance of the Constitution and the values it represents.
“I think basically, it's kind of like a recommitment to the values that that hopefully we all stand for. Perhaps by looking at the Constitution and recognizing that “We The People” means all the people that we can help to heal some of the divisions. We wanted to present this in a non-partisan way. Constitution affects us all ,” said Mark Decker, who helped bring the “We the People” project to Lima.
The banner featuring signatures from across the country will be displayed on the National Mall in Washington on July 4.
